Hurricane the storm is predicted to become a infrequent category five hurricane as it turns in the direction of Jamaica, bringing deadly flash flooding and mudslides.

The hurricane, which registered wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean and is projected to hit the coast by midweek, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Advisories of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been issued as this storm brings up to 76cm of rain and sea level surges as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," residents have been urged.

This hurricane is the 13th cyclone in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in late autumn.

Most Intense Storm Threat

A category five hurricane is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Although this storm is set to weaken to a category four hurricane before reaching the island, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the overall impacts" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it impacts the nation.

Immediate Preparations

With storm-force gusts and precipitation predicted to begin well before it crosses central Jamaica - perhaps encompassing the national capital - warnings emphasize that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"Several days of harmful winds and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause severe and deadly flash flooding and numerous rock slides," advised climate experts.

The nation's leader the statesman said: "I understand that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: concern is justified.

"But the best way to handle nervousness and any unease and anxiety is to be prepared."

Residents are being instructed to fortify their houses with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to accumulate essentials.

Wider Impact

Warnings are also in effect for regions of Haiti including the primary urban center, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is projected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Rock slides currently triggered by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Expected Trajectory

The hurricane is forecast to cross Cuba by Wednesday before passing across the Greater Antilles and out into the open ocean.

By the point it arrives at Cuba, it is forecast to have diminished to a third-level hurricane.
