Senate Greenlights Measure to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration changed course after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

“The American people have waited long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next goes to the president for his endorsement. He signaled on Monday that he would sign the measure.

Even though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the official management of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the measure over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their advocates who were present in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he worried the measure would reveal identifying details of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
