Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
New research indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
